Everyone knows that Mary gave birth to Jesus in a miraculous fashion. Jesus born of a virgin. However, many people of a certain denomination (which I will not mention here) overemphasise the divinity of Mary.
Her nicknames include: Virgin Mary and Mother Mary
But let us look a little closer at those titles… indeed we will see the inaccuracies in these titles….
Virgin Mary
Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. No doubt about that! Scripture states it multiple times, it was prophesied even before Mary was even born! (Isaiah 7:14)
So what’s the problem?
Following the birth of Jesus, Mary gave birth to sons and daughters as well. This is an indication that Mary could not have remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus! So why do people still call her Virgin Mary? This is a thought to consider. At the present, Mary is long been deceased. She is not watching over us neither is she praying for us. Jesus is the One who is interceding for us. Mary is not God neither is she the Mother of God.
Mother of God
There are many references in the Bible stating that Jesus’ mother asked Jesus to do certain things. A profound example is found in John chapter 2. Jesus’ mother asked Him to get more wine. Jesus replied: “Dear woman, why do you involve me? My time has not yet come.” John 2:4
Notice, He did not call her ‘mother’
On the cross in John 19:26-27 “Dear woman….”
In fact, Matthew 12:48, when His mother and brothers wanted to speak to Him, He stated this: “Who is my mother and and my brothers?” Pointing to His disciples He said, “Here are my mother and brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
So why do people worship Mary? Some say they don’t but still follow tradition. Some believe she is more powerful than Jesus. Jesus is the Name above all Names. Scripture proves it. However, no where in scripture, does it state that worship should be given unto Mary but all glory and honour unto Jesus.
We must worship the Creator and not His creation.
The fact that Mary was chosen was God’s will and grace. The fact that she gave birth a virgin is God’s power displayed.
Mary was not an extraordinary person. She had an extraordinary purpose.
So worship God alone and honour Him for what He has done….. sending His Son to die upon the cross for our sins so that we can have eternal life.
